Every year industrial parks in Vietnam destroy an amount of hazardous waste of up to 550,000 tons

Every year, industrial parks in Vietnam burn an amount of hazardous waste of up to 550,000 tons. This data only highlights the serious problem of environmental management in industrial parks across the country.

Currently, among the 29 industrial parks in operation, there is still no centralized wastewater treatment system. This poses a big challenge in ensuring environmental safety and community health. These industrial parks are concentrated in many provinces such as Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Hung Yen, and many other places.

Although there are environmental impact assessment reporting units and environmental protection projects, the reality is that more than 12,200 establishments in the industrial park still generate more than 4.2 million tons of solid waste. This is especially noteworthy. Currently, 100% of industrial parks have environmental impact assessment reports and environmental protection projects. More than 12,200 establishments operate in the industrial park, generating more than 4.2 million tons of solid waste, of which the industrial park in the Southeast region accounts for 61.02%. Hazardous waste generated from industrial parks annually is about 550,000 tons. Industrial parks in the northern midlands and mountainous areas are the most developed, accounting for 45%.

But to face this challenge, a comprehensive transformation in the operating model of industrial parks is needed. Ms. Tran To Loan, Deputy General Director of Sao Do Group, mentioned the transition from the traditional model to the ecological model in Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park in Hai Phong. However, difficulties in capital resources and legal regulations are still major barriers.

To promote sustainable development of industrial zones, specific and effective solutions are needed. This includes improving regulations and policies, as well as creating more favorable conditions for transforming operating models. At the same time, close cooperation between stakeholders is needed to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

The work of implementing specific measures to deal with waste and environmental problems in industrial zones needs to be further promoted. First, there needs to be a detailed plan and synchronization of regulations related to environmental management and waste treatment in industrial zones. This includes the development of specific standards and guidelines on waste management and environmental protection.

In addition, it is necessary to invest heavily in waste and wastewater treatment infrastructure in industrial zones. This may require cooperation between governments, businesses and international organizations to provide the capital and technology needed to build and operate advanced treatment systems.

At the same time, it is necessary to encourage and support businesses in industrial parks to convert to cleaner and sustainable production models. This could include providing financial and technical support to upgrade production lines and promote the use of more environmentally efficient technology.

There should be measures to encourage and reward businesses with good environmental protection and waste treatment practices. This could include tax incentives and financial support for businesses that implement environmental protection measures and use resources more efficiently.

Finally, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring and inspection to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards in industrial zones. This requires close cooperation between government agencies, environmental management organizations and businesses to ensure that environmental protection measures are implemented effectively and continuously.
