Apple has officially joined the AI race by introducing its proprietary AI system, Apple Intelligence, at the WWDC event. Notably, Apple has partnered with OpenAI in this endeavor, which is expected to bring significant changes to the global AI landscape.
WWDC, one of Apple's most anticipated technology events each year, served as the stage for the launch of Apple Intelligence. This system will be deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia operating systems. Through Apple Intelligence, users can directly access OpenAI's ChatGPT service without needing to download a separate ChatGPT app.
Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, stated, "Users will be able to access ChatGPT without creating an account and without storing personal information. For paid users, they can still log in to use more advanced features, and they will have full control over their access every time they use ChatGPT."
The collaboration between Apple and OpenAI has been highly praised by experts. The combination of OpenAI's advanced AI technology with Apple's vast user base is expected to bring about a major breakthrough in the AI market. Dan Ives, CEO of Wedbush Securities, noted, "AI has finally officially entered Apple's ecosystem. With 2.2 billion devices and 25% of the global market share, Apple doesn't need to lead but to guide AI effectively. I believe the timing of this launch is just right."
However, this partnership has also raised concerns about security, especially given OpenAI's previous controversies regarding security and rapid development. Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but later criticized the company under CEO Sam Altman's leadership, strongly opposed Apple's decision on his social media account on X. He stated, "If Apple deeply integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, I will ban Apple devices in my companies. This is an unacceptable security violation."
Of course, Musk's reaction is also seen as a competitive move, given that he owns his own AI development company, xAI. Despite the numerous advantages, experts believe that the collaboration between Apple and OpenAI will need time to prove its effectiveness in a highly competitive field dominated by major tech players like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta.
