An Giang province’s sea-sand construction initiative: opening up new horizons for highways

With the gradual depletion of global river sand resources, there is an urgent need to find sustainable alternative building materials. An Giang Province in Vietnam is facing the dual challenges of river bank erosion and lack of river sand resources, which not only affects the local ecological environment, but also has a major impact on infrastructure projects, especially the construction of highways. Against this background, An Giang Province has put forward an innovative proposal: using sea sand instead of traditional river sand as the main material for highway construction.

Sand and gravel resource pressure
Since river sand is the main material for traditional construction, long-term over-exploitation has led to the decline of the river bed, damage to the ecosystem, and increasingly serious river bank erosion problems. A report from An Giang Province pointed out that four local river sand mining areas have suspended mining due to environmental reasons. The situation has forced authorities to look for alternative solutions to meet the growing construction demands.

The potential of sea sand
Sea sand is an attractive option due to its abundant reserves and low environmental impact. An Giang province’s proposal builds on the success of an initial pilot project in which sea sand was used as a base material in the construction of a section of the highway and demonstrated that its physical properties meet relevant standards. This successful case provides a reliable reference for further exploration and application of sea sand.

Implementation challenges
However, widespread use of sea sand in highway construction faces multiple challenges. The first are technical challenges, including cleaning of sea sand, salt treatment, and compatibility assessment of concrete and other building materials. Furthermore, from an environmental perspective, there is a need to assess the impact of sea sand mining on marine ecology and how to effectively manage these impacts to ensure environmental sustainability.

Policies and Standards
In order to promote the effective utilization of sea sand, relevant policies and technical standards need to be formulated. This includes regulations for mining, handling and transporting sea sand, as well as determining its suitability and environmental standards for different construction projects. Government agencies, research institutions and industry organizations need to work together to develop comprehensive guidelines and regulations to guide the extraction and use of marine sand.

Looking to the future
An Giang province’s sea sand construction initiative not only provides a solution to the local shortage of sand and gravel resources, but also contributes to the sustainable development of the global construction industry.
