Behold the 'Heart' of Long Thanh Airport After Nearly 300 Days of Construction

After nearly 300 days of construction, the passenger terminal – the 'heart' of Long Thanh Airport – with its stylized lotus flower design has taken shape. The progress is ahead of schedule by 10-20 days compared to the contract.

The Shape of the Passenger Terminal After Nearly 300 Days

The passenger terminal (package 5.10, part of the third component of Long Thanh Airport Phase 1) began construction at the end of August 2023. The project has a total investment of over 35 trillion VND, and upon completion, it will serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the passenger terminal (central terminal and three wings) has a structure of one ground floor and three upper floors, with a roof height of 45.55 meters. The terminal is designed with separate levels for arrivals and departures, with a total floor area of approximately 376,451 square meters, accommodating 40 parking positions for Code C, E, and F aircraft.

Impressive Construction Progress

Currently, the contractor consortium has deployed nearly 3,300 workers and 950 pieces of construction equipment on site. To ensure progress, ACV has required the consortium to overcome difficulties and organize "three shifts, four crews" to accelerate construction.

As of May 22, the passenger terminal has basically completed the reinforced concrete for all columns on the first floor, with the concrete beams and slabs on the first floor reaching 97,200 square meters out of 114,000 square meters, achieving 85% completion. The ACV report states that by the end of May 2024, the contractor will complete 100% of the first-floor concrete beam and slab structure. The construction progress is 20 days ahead of the rough construction schedule and 10 days ahead of the overall package schedule compared to the contract.

Related Projects

Along with the passenger terminal construction, package 4.6 includes runways (4,000x45 meters); taxiways, connecting taxiways, and rapid exit taxiways (total area of approximately 69.3 hectares); 20 aircraft parking positions (area of approximately 47.09 hectares); and ground service vehicle parking areas (approximately 12.4 hectares).

Since the start of construction, the contractor consortium has mobilized 1,500 personnel and 350 pieces of machinery with 50 construction points to serve the package, keeping pace with the planned schedule. To date, the construction items of the package have been inspected, supervised, and accepted according to the project's technical standards, ensuring quality and progress.

Currently, the contractor has basically completed the runway subgrade and M150 cement concrete for the runway structure, with M350/45 cement concrete pavement testing starting from early May 2024, keeping pace with the planned schedule.

Connecting Roads

Package 6.12 includes two connecting roads, T1 and T2. The T1 road connects to National Highway 51 (length 4.28 km, scale 6 lanes) and the T2 road connects to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway (length approximately 3.5 km, scale 4 lanes).

To date, the contractor consortium has completed 100% of the civil underpass, 74.9% of cement soil piles, and 40-66% of earthworks. For the bridge part, the abutment foundation has completed 81.2%, the abutment body has completed 68.1%; the pier cap has completed 54.5%, and the bored piles have completed 86-94%.

Overall Workforce and Machinery

Currently, a total of 5,430 personnel, engineers, workers, and 1,496 pieces of machinery and equipment have been mobilized for the packages (5.10, 4.6, and 6.12) of Long Thanh Airport Phase 1. From vast rubber plantations, after three and a half years of construction, Long Thanh Airport has become a large construction site with numerous projects being rapidly built.
