"Can Gio" Vietnam international transshipment port expected to launch before 2030

Ho Chi Minh City Government advances major infrastructure projects to strengthen regional connectivity and economic development in Southeast Asia

Ho Chi Minh City - The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee recently submitted a proposal to build the "Can Gio" international transshipment port to the Vietnamese government, hoping to receive review and guidance. The move is seen as a crucial step for the economic development and defense security of the city and the Southeast Asian region.

The "Can Gio" international transhipment port project aims to build a modern logistics hub that meets international standards for Ho Chi Minh City and Southeast Asia. The project will enhance intra-regional freight efficiency, improve the handling capacity of large ships, and promote economic growth in the local and surrounding areas.

Currently, maritime infrastructure in Southeast Asia is facing unprecedented development needs. According to official data, Ho Chi Minh City's port will experience an average annual growth rate of 9.1% between 2015 and 2022, demonstrating the urgent need to expand and upgrade port facilities to cope with the growing volume of maritime cargo.

The construction of the "Can Gio" international transhipment port will enable Ho Chi Minh City to handle larger-scale international freight and further integrate the city into the global supply chain as an important international shipping center. The port is expected to directly contribute approximately VND340-400 billion (approximately US$1.5 billion-1.75 billion) in annual revenue to the national economy and create approximately 6000-8000 jobs.

In addition, the operation of the "Can Gio" international transshipment port will promote the comprehensive development of local infrastructure, attract foreign direct investment, and enhance Vietnam's position in international trade. The port is expected to begin operations before 2030, with two major terminals initially built and construction of all major terminals completed by 2045.

Phan Văn Mãi, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, stressed that the project will use green energy and automation technology to ensure sustainable development and protect the local ecological environment. When planning the "Can Gio" international transhipment port, the importance of protecting the mangrove ecosystem in the Cần Giờ area will be fully taken into consideration.

The construction of the "Can Gio" international transshipment port is not only an important milestone for Ho Chi Minh City, but also an important step for Vietnam in the field of international shipping. It will help improve Vietnam’s international shipping capabilities and attract more international logistics companies and shipping companies to set up base here, thereby enhancing Vietnam’s position in the global supply chain.

With the opening of the "Can Gio" international transshipment port, Ho Chi Minh City will become an important gateway connecting Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. This will not only promote Vietnam’s trade and logistics business, but will also be beneficial to economic integration and collaborative growth throughout Southeast Asia.

In addition, the project will also strengthen Vietnam’s connectivity with major global shipping routes, especially those leading to Europe, America and Africa. This will help reduce transportation time and costs and improve the competitiveness of Vietnam’s export goods.

To ensure the successful implementation of the project, the Ho Chi Minh City Government has planned to upgrade related infrastructure, including roads, bridges and communication systems, as well as build residential and office areas specially designed for port staff and experts. These measures will help improve the port's operational efficiency and attract a highly skilled workforce.

Finally, the construction and operation of the "Can Gio" international transshipment port will comply with international best practices and environmental protection standards to ensure sustainable development and reduce environmental impact. This will position Vietnam as an environmentally conscious pioneer in maritime transport and logistics and demonstrate its commitment to global environmental responsibility.

All in all, the construction of the "Can Gio" international transshipment port is a major development project that will have a profound positive impact on Ho Chi Minh City and even Vietnam as a whole. With the implementation of this ambitious plan, Vietnam is entering a new era of international shipping, providing strong support for the country's economic growth and international status.
