The New Look of Ho Chi Minh City's Alleys After Six Months of Land Donation for Widening

Over the past six months, hundreds of residents in Phu Nhuan District and District 3 have demonstrated a high level of community spirit by voluntarily donating land to widen several alleyways. This initiative not only expanded these narrow pathways to twice or even three times their original size but also significantly improved the usability of transportation infrastructure and the aesthetic appeal of the city. This act serves as a model of urban communalism, bringing tangible and practical benefits, such as increasing property values and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

On November 12th, Alley 140D Co Giang, Ward 2, Phu Nhuan District, was officially completed after six months of construction. In early May, nearly 60 households agreed to demolish walls, remove fences, and move their homes inward by about one meter, expanding the alley from the original 1.8 meters to 4-5 meters wide. The government spent about 500 million VND to complete the infrastructure, restore the road surface, and upgrade the electrical system. This project not only significantly improved traffic conditions but also created a more spacious and convenient public space, bringing obvious benefits to the daily commutes of residents.

During the implementation of the project, various challenges had to be overcome. According to Mr. Nguyen Dong Tung, Chairman of Phu Nhuan District People's Committee, it took three years to develop the plan, mobilize, and gain consensus from the residents. Some households, especially those with smaller living spaces, were initially hesitant about the land donation, fearing that it would negatively impact their living space and property value. However, with persistent persuasion and reasonable support policies from the government, the residents eventually agreed to donate their land for the common good. The outcome of this effort not only improved urban infrastructure but also fostered stronger connections within the community, enhancing residents' pride in their contributions to society.

A particularly notable example is Ms. Le Thi Vi, 86, who has lived in the alley for nearly 70 years. Ms. Vi decided to move her home's outer wall inward by about one meter to increase road space and improve circulation in the entire area. Now, the width of the alley is close to 5 meters, making it much easier for cars and other vehicles to navigate, and her property value has also increased significantly as a result. Ms. Vi shared that, although the process of repairing and adjusting her home brought many inconveniences, she felt very satisfied seeing the alley become more spacious, ventilated, and beneficial to the entire community. This is a testament to the harmonious combination of community and individual interests, creating a better future for everyone.

This initiative did not stop at Phu Nhuan District; Alley 549 Nguyen Dinh Chieu in District 3 was also widened from 3 meters to 5 meters. In 2024, District 3 has undertaken the widening of about 40 alleys across 12 wards, focusing primarily on alleys less than 3 meters wide to ensure fire safety and upgrade infrastructure. Previously, these narrow alleys made it extremely difficult for emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances to pass through. With the alleys now widened to 5 meters, rescue vehicles can access the area more easily, significantly improving safety and meeting fire safety standards for the region. Furthermore, widening the alleys helps alleviate local traffic congestion, especially during peak hours when residents return home from work or school, leading to noticeable improvements in traffic conditions.

Another important highlight of this project is the strong support from the government in relocating residents and improving infrastructure. The local government not only provided funding for road restoration but also installed drainage systems and upgraded the electricity and water supply systems. The Phu Nhuan District government spent approximately 500 million VND to improve the infrastructure for Alley 140D Co Giang. This effort is part of a broader city initiative to improve urban living conditions, making alleys safer, cleaner, and more resident-friendly.

The policy of donating land to widen alleys and roads in Ho Chi Minh City was launched in 2000 and has gradually expanded to many different districts. Over the past 24 years, more than 168,000 households have voluntarily donated a total of 5.3 million square meters of land, making significant contributions to the improvement of urban structures. These land donation initiatives not only make roads wider and more accessible but also serve as a powerful testament to the spirit of solidarity and community connection among city residents. The widened alleys not only improve the quality of life but also symbolize sustainable development and social consensus.

The widening of alleys also has significant implications for increasing property values. Areas with widened alleys have seen notable increases in real estate value, attracting the interest of investors and potential homebuyers. Additionally, this initiative has created opportunities for local economic development, as shops and services in the area have become busier due to improved accessibility and better living conditions, making these areas more prosperous.
