In the context of Ho Chi Minh City’s strong push for urban renewal linked with improved living environment quality, a series of key infrastructure projects are being implemented in a coordinated manner, aiming toward long-term sustainable urban development.
Accordingly, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has approved the investment policy for the project on infrastructure construction and environmental improvement of Ong Bau Canal and Chin Xieng Canal. The project is invested by the Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, with a total investment of over VND 2,939 billion funded by the city budget.
The project is located in An Nhon Ward and is scheduled for implementation from 2026 to 2029. The synchronized investment in infrastructure combined with environmental restoration is expected to enhance regional connectivity, reduce pressure on existing infrastructure systems, and lay the foundation for modern and sustainable urban development.
The main objective of the project is to improve drainage capacity, reduce localized flooding in residential areas along the canals and nearby roads, especially during the rainy season. In addition, the project also focuses on improving water environmental quality by addressing pollution caused by household waste and untreated wastewater discharged directly into the canal system, thereby improving the overall quality of life for local residents.
According to the planning, the project will focus on key activities such as dredging canal beds, improving water flow, and restoring the natural ecosystem, thereby contributing to better environmental quality in the area. In parallel, the technical infrastructure along the route will be synchronously upgraded, including transportation, drainage, lighting systems, and urban greenery.
In the Ong Bau Canal area, the project covers a route of approximately 380 meters, divided into two segments, connecting with the Tham Luong – Ben Cat – Nhieu Loc canal system and surrounding road networks. The canal will be dredged to a width ranging from 6 to 23 meters, combined with reinforced concrete embankments on both sides, along with completed sidewalks and related technical infrastructure. Drainage systems, wastewater collection, greenery, and lighting will also be developed in a synchronized manner to ensure environmental and landscape quality.
For Chin Xieng Canal, the total renovation length is about 890 meters, divided into three construction sections. The scope includes dredging, embankment construction, and completion of drainage systems. In addition, the project will include the construction of two roads, one reinforced concrete bridge, and associated technical infrastructure.
Furthermore, several parks and large green spaces will be arranged along the canals, creating a greener urban environment and improving residents’ quality of life.
Previously, in January 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee approved Phase 1 of the Van Thanh Canal environmental improvement and infrastructure development project in Thanh My Tay Ward. The project has a total investment of more than VND 1,743 billion from the city budget, scheduled for implementation from 2025 to 2030.
These projects aim to enhance urban upgrading efforts, improve canal environments, increase drainage and flood-control capacity, while developing transportation systems, parks, and green spaces along the routes. This will contribute to improving the urban landscape, promoting socio-economic development, and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
