Ho Chi Minh City Plans to Connect Transportation with Metro Line 1

Post Date : Tuesday, June 04, 2024

When the Metro Line 1 is completed and put into operation, it is expected to add 2 new bus routes and 2 new bicycle parking locations to serve transportation and convenience around the metro stations.

Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has announced an agreement on the plans and transportation means connecting the surrounding areas of the Metro Line 1 stations. Accordingly, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport (DoT) to monitor the operation of the connecting transportation means around the Metro Line 1 stations, coordinating with the Thu Duc City People's Committee and relevant units to promptly adjust the connection plans during the operation and exploitation of Metro Line 1.

Additionally, the Metro Line 1 One Member Limited Liability Company is responsible for completing the operational plan by 2025 and implementing the tasks to effectively operate and exploit Metro Line 1. Accordingly, the company must take into account the feedback from the DoT and coordinate with the Public Transport Management Center and relevant units.

According to the DoT report, the area around Quach Thi Trang Square (Ben Thanh Market area) currently has 18 existing bus routes (routes 1, 3, 4, 18, 19, 20, 31, 34, 36, 38, 39, 44, 45, 52, 53, 56, 65, 75, 88, 93, 102, 109, 152, D4) with 3,528 trips/day, serving an average of 66,795 passengers/day, with routes passing through Ben Thanh Market area (passengers get on and off at the transit station on Ham Nghi Street) ensuring the travel needs of the people in the area.

HCMC's metro latest plan: 7 trains to enter operation in July - VnExpress International

It is expected that the DoT will continue to open 2 new bus routes to connect Ben Thanh Metro Station (after Metro Line 1 officially operates), including: Saigon Bus Station - City Theater (capacity of 17-20 passengers, 206 trips/day) and Saigon Bus Station - Hoa Hung Station (capacity of 17-20 passengers, 206 trips/day).

For bicycles, besides the existing 43 bicycle parking stations (including 3 locations near Quach Thi Trang Square on Ham Nghi, Le Loi, and Le Lai streets), it is expected to add 2 more locations on the sidewalk of Pham Ngu Lao Street (ship's prow area) and the sidewalk of 23/9 Park.

According to the pilot project for tourist transportation by double-decker, open-top buses, there are DL 01 Route (city center tour) and DL 02 Route (Saigon - Gia Dinh City tour) operating daily, with routes passing through Ben Thanh Market area (Tran Hung Dao, Le Lai streets). On May 4, 2024, the DoT continued to expand the pilot service for tourist transportation by double-decker, open-top buses; proposing to adjust and expand the pilot to the Cho Lon area.

Regarding the pick-up and drop-off points for electric four-wheeled vehicles and double-decker, open-top buses, the DoT plans to arrange the pick-up and drop-off point at the beginning of Pham Ngu Lao Street (23/9 Park side, about 100 meters from Quach Thi Trang Square intersection) to serve the travel needs of tourists visiting Ben Thanh Market area (vehicles are only allowed to stop for pick-up and drop-off, not for parking).

Regarding train operation time, the Metro Line 1 One Member Limited Liability Company proposed, in 2024, Metro Line 1 trains will run from 5 AM to 10 PM, with a frequency of every 8-12 minutes and 200 trips/day. In 2025, when officially operating, trains will run from 5 AM to 11:30 PM, with a frequency of every 4.5-8 minutes from Monday to Friday and every 8 minutes/trip on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

The DoT also forecasts that in 2025, the number of passengers transported on Metro Line 1 will be around 38,939 passengers/day.
