On June 21, Chinese tech giant Huawei announced its latest operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT, and an update to its Pangu large language model for artificial intelligence. This marks a significant step in Huawei's efforts towards technological self-reliance, challenging global AI leaders including OpenAI, Google, Apple, and Nvidia.
Since the United States blacklisted Huawei and restricted its access to American technology, the company has prioritized developing its own operating system to replace Google’s Android. Huawei claims that their solution has now achieved complete self-security and controllability.
In the AI sector, China is striving to develop its own versions of OpenAI’s technology and competitive hardware solutions to rival Nvidia. This update will see HarmonyOS NEXT used across all Huawei products, including smartphones, PCs, tablets, cars, wearable devices, and enterprise applications. Since its launch a decade ago, the operating system has been installed on over 900 million devices.
Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, stated at the company’s developer conference in a Chinese city: “We have seized this opportunity to surpass our competitors by building an operating system that is self-controlled and secure. In just over a decade, we have achieved significant milestones that it would take Western countries three to four decades to accomplish.”

In terms of AI, the Pangu 5.0 large language model features four different training models of varying sizes: the smallest model can be embedded in smartphones, the mid-sized model has up to 90 billion parameters, and the “super” model boasts 230 billion parameters for handling complex tasks. Parameters are variables that adjust AI training; the more parameters, the stronger the model and its capability to handle complex training tasks. OpenAI’s latest GPT-4 model has 1.76 trillion parameters.
Huawei also introduced weather forecasting robots and smart manufacturing solutions, similar to those announced by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at the recent global trade show Computex in Taipei. Yu stated, “The latest version is different from existing operating systems. Harmony OS NEXT will be an all-in-one system.” He added that Huawei's upcoming smartphone, the Mate 70, set to launch at the end of this year, will feature the new system, with more supported models expected by 2025. In comparison, other companies’ operating systems like Android and Apple’s iOS are used for smartphones and tablets, while Microsoft Windows and Apple’s MacOS are more suited for computers.
The Chinese tech group also launched the Harmony Intelligence infrastructure to integrate AI capabilities into its devices, including the AI voice assistant Celia. The release of Harmony Intelligence and Harmony OS Next comes just weeks after Apple introduced Apple Intelligence.
Harmony OS has become the second-largest mobile operating system in China, surpassing Apple’s iOS. According to Canalys data, Harmony OS's market share reached 17.95% in the first quarter of 2024, up from just 6.5% in 2022. This compares to Android’s 67.2% and Apple iOS’s approximately 14.8% in the first quarter of 2024.
Yu stated that Harmony OS has reached 900 million users, with over 1,500 of the top 5,000 applications having switched from Android to Harmony.
The CEO also mentioned that Huawei continues to build the foundation for artificial intelligence (AI), including the computing power of the Ascend AI accelerator chips, Kunpeng server CPUs, Cortex chips for device CPUs, and the Pangu large language model.
