Development of the Dong Nai - Ho Chi Minh City Transportation Connectivity System: Economic Impact and Strategic Direction

Post Date : Tuesday, March 25, 2025

In the context of transportation infrastructure increasingly becoming a crucial factor in socio-economic development, the People's Committee of Dong Nai Province has decided to implement three major bridge projects to directly connect with Ho Chi Minh City. These projects include Dong Nai 2 Bridge, Phu My 2 Bridge, and Cat Lai Bridge, which not only help alleviate traffic congestion but also bring strategic impacts to regional development.

Bridge Connectivity System—A Pillar of Regional Transport Infrastructure

1. Dong Nai 2 Bridge: Strengthening Infrastructure Connectivity and Logistics Development

Dong Nai 2 Bridge plays a strategic role in connecting Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, with Tam An Commune, Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province. Designed with six lanes, the bridge is scheduled for construction between 2026 and 2030. It is expected to become a key transportation axis, easing traffic pressure on National Highway 1 and the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway.

The People's Committee of Dong Nai Province has also proposed that Ho Chi Minh City integrate Dong Nai 2 Bridge into the DT.777B road plan to optimize logistics channels between the two regions. Once completed, the bridge will facilitate trade circulation, promote industrial zone development, and increase real estate values in Long Thanh and Thu Duc City.

2. Phu My 2 Bridge: Promoting the Economic Corridor Between Southern Ho Chi Minh City and Nhon Trach

Phu My 2 Bridge is planned to strengthen connectivity between the southern part of Ho Chi Minh City and Nhon Trach District, Dong Nai Province. The bridge will extend from Nguyen Huu Tho Street, follow Hoang Quoc Viet Road, cross the Dong Nai River perpendicularly into Nhon Trach’s rapidly developing urban area.

Ho Chi Minh City is recommended to expand the bridge’s approach roads to eight lanes to align with Dong Nai’s planned and invested DT.769D (25C) road. The construction of Phu My 2 Bridge will significantly shorten travel time between Long Thanh International Airport and southern Ho Chi Minh City, enhance logistics center development, reduce traffic burden on the existing Phu My Bridge, and promote industrial and commercial growth in Nhon Trach.

3. Cat Lai Bridge: Resolving Traffic Bottlenecks and Enhancing Satellite Urban Development

Cat Lai Bridge is a strategic project aimed at replacing the increasingly congested Cat Lai Ferry. The Prime Minister of Vietnam has approved incorporating this bridge into Ho Chi Minh City’s transportation plan. The bridge is designed with six lanes and is scheduled for construction before 2025.

The completion of Cat Lai Bridge will effectively address severe traffic congestion in the area while accelerating Nhon Trach’s urbanization, transforming it into an important satellite city of Ho Chi Minh City. The bridge’s construction is expected to attract investors in real estate, commerce, and industry, fostering economic integration between eastern Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province.

Strategic Impact of the Transportation Connectivity System

The large-scale investment in transport infrastructure between Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City extends beyond solving bottlenecks, with potential advantages including:

  • Reducing pressure on major transport routes, such as National Highway 1, National Highway 1K, and the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway.

  • Optimizing logistics corridors, particularly for freight movement from Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Long An to Ho Chi Minh City and Cat Lai Port.

  • Reshaping urban development spaces, positioning Nhon Trach and Long Thanh as key satellite cities.

  • Attracting investment, fostering industrial, commercial, and real estate market growth.

  • Strengthening connectivity with Long Thanh International Airport, reducing dependency on central Ho Chi Minh City and creating favorable conditions for regional economic development.

In addition to the three bridges mentioned above, two other key transport projects—Phuoc Khanh Bridge on the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway and Nhon Trach Bridge on the Ring Road 3—are also under construction. The completion of these bridges will further solidify Ho Chi Minh City’s connectivity with the southern key economic region, laying a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth.

Conclusion

Investing in the transportation connectivity system between Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City will not only provide immediate relief from traffic congestion but also ensure long-term strategic development. These projects will drive the formation of a modern city-industrial-logistics ecosystem, establishing a robust foundation for economic growth in the southeastern region for decades to come.
